Sept 2025: We hope you all had a wonderful and eventful summer. In South Africa, July was dominated by Nelson Mandela Day on July 18. Sixty-seven minutes of community service – that is the call of this special day, named after the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, peace and human rights. This day was also celebrated with heart, enthusiasm and creativity in our projects.

Children's home
On Mandela Day, the children at the home literally rolled up their sleeves and planted a vegetable garden. Fresh vegetables from their own garden – this does not only mean healthy meals, but also taking responsibility and experiencing how something big can grow from small seeds.
“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” Nelson Mandela
During the holiday season, which is emotionally difficult for many children in the home, our social workers and house mothers provided a loving and inspiring holiday program. A special highlight was the “Burning the Past” project, which helped the children to let go of old pain and find new hope. A trip to the local museum also gave them a glimpse into history. In addition, some of the boys successfully participated in a soccer tournament. And there were new winter clothes for everyone—because even in South Africa, winter can get quite cold.
Village project & preschools
Great things have been achieved at one of our preschools in the village project, the Ekucabangeni Crèche: the roof, which had been damaged by a storm, was repaired and the building was completely re-plastered and repainted. Now the preschool is safe and welcoming again – a place for learning, playing and laughing.
Feeding project
Mandela Day was also celebrated in the feeding project with a feast for everyone: chicken and rice. The children also received small gifts: toys, painting supplies and warm clothing such as scarves and hats – with the children's shining eyes as the most beautiful thank you.
Township project
In our township project, project manager Phindile takes wonderful care of the little ones. She is currently planning to purchase warm winter clothing (hats, scarves, gloves) for the kindergarten children – urgently needed at this time of year.
And there is great news: we would like to support three young adults from the township to train in security services – a profession with prospects, especially in a region with high crime and unemployment rates.
Siyabonga – thank you! None of these developments would be possible without your support. Together, we bring hope, education, warmth, and joy to where they are urgently needed.
